Version  2.1.X :

  ld = ldap_init(theServer, pPortNumber);
  if ( !ld )
     return 1;

  rc = ldap_set_option(ld, LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, &version);
  if ( rc != LDAP_OPT_SUCCESS )
     return false;
  rc = ldap_simple_bind_s(ld, theLogon, thePassword);

In other way, the version 2.1.X have the 'hasSubordinates' attributes
If I can test the version, I know if this attribute is available or not.
