question about authentication

I am using PAM as the backend (with PLAIN over SSL) to authenticate to my 
ldap server.

If I run ldapsearch -Z from the command line, I am prompted for a login, 
and upon a successful password being entered,  can view data.

However, I now want to enable "login" on client software 
(netscape,eudora,outlook).

It appears that I need to have simple bind working for this to work. Is 
this possible?
