pam_ldap Just will not work

I can not get pam_ldap to work. However nss_ldap works fine. I downloaded
and compiled pam_ldap from padl. I had to exchange .h file from my linux
box to my solaris (intel)8 box. I got pam_ldap to build and install
perfectly. However when I tried to authenticate with it I get nothing.
Also I tried a pam.conf with nothing in it except pam_ldap. The xterms
just disapeared. Could some one please tell me what is going on.
