Can't get ldap clients tools to work with auth...

Hello...

 Using latest RH 7.2 openldap rpms. I can do things like

ldapsearch -x uid=blah

 to get ldap search results.

 However, I can't seem to get things to work at all when I try to authenticate
using -W option.

 I'm doing : ldapsearch -W -D "uid=root,ou=People,dc=blah" :

 After typing in the root password for the ldap entry, I get :

ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: No such attribute

 Running ldapsearch -d 5 -ZZ shows me (among other things):

 ldap_interactive_sasl_bind_s: server supports: PLAIN LOGIN
ldap_int_sasl_bind: PLAIN LOGIN
ldap_perror
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Unknown authentication method

  I assume there is something basic I'm missing. Any help would be
appreciated.  Thanks....
