ldap configuration error cannot bind:

I've been working on getting openldap on a home network, but got stumped in the middle of the configuration.  Subsequently I have some password issues, especially with samba.

Can someone point me in the proper direction for this error:

smbpasswd User1
New SMB password: secret
Retype new SMB pasword: secret
Bind failed: Can't contact LDAP server
Failed to find entry for user User1.
Failed to modify password entry for user User1
