Because it's caching the information in memory (?). If you have 
deleted an object, and then add (the same or another one), slapd
will reuse the empty space INSIDE the database file.

This the major reasons why NOT to do backups (file or tape etc) 
of the database directory. There are other ways, see the admin
guide...
