OpenLDAP 1.2.x replication problem

I have a single master and 4 slaves, running OpenLDAP 1.2.12 on a 
mixture of Red Hat Linux 6.1, 6.2, and 7.0 systems.  The master 
runs Red Hat Linux 6.1.

I've had problems with replication for as long as I've had it 
set up (more than a year), under various versions of OpenLDAP 1.2.x.

Intermittently, slaves will not get updated.  I find .rej files 
on the master.  Typically, they contain "ERROR: Already exists" 
at the beginning of the transaction.  If I query that slave for 
that directory object, it does NOT exist.

Today I shut down one of my slave directory servers, my notebook.
I added an object to the master directory server.  The other 3 
slaves were updated successfully, but a .rej file was created 
for my notebook, saying "ERROR: Already exists".

Obviously, since the machine wasn't even running, this is a 
bogus error.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?  Anyone else 
experiencing similar problems?  Is OpenLDAP 2.0.x any better at 
replication than 1.2.x?
