Time CPU

Hi,
I use openldap on Debian Potato. It's OK but when i do "ls -l /usr/mail"
(there are only 20 files in this directory), it takes a long time
because of LDAP request.
slapd use a lot of CPU nearly 90 %.

Is it normal ?
Can I reduce this percentage ?
It's my mail server and i have nearly 500 users, what will be happend if
100 users make an LDAP request at the same time ?

Thanks.
