I have just seemed to isolate my problem, I would appreciate it if someone 
would explain to me why the particular -b -t arguments are not working for 
me below. First are two successful password changes without any -t argument:

# ldappasswd -vvv -D "cn=Manager, dc=test, dc=com" -w secret -b 
'dc=test,dc=com' '(uid=user1@test.com)' -H crypt -h localhost
New password:
Re-enter new password:
uid=user1@test.com, ou=accounts, dc=test, 
dc=com:{crypt}7jOKqc2SIGVv.:secretuser


# ldappasswd -vvv -D "cn=Manager, dc=test, dc=com" -w secret -b 
'ou=accounts,dc=test,dc=com' '(uid=user1@test.com)' -H crypt -h localhost
Re-enter new password:
uid=user1@test.com, ou=accounts, dc=test, 
dc=com:{crypt}QhWX.3bTbjPN6:secretuser


# ldappasswd -vvv -D "cn=Manager, dc=test, dc=com" -w secret -b 
'ou=accounts,dc=test,dc=com' -t '(uid=user1@test.com)' -H crypt -h localhost
New password:
Re-enter new password:
(uid=user1@test.com):{crypt}mDsm6RqRcQ2hM:secretuser
ldap_modify: No such object
