Help on Index

TO all LDAP gurus,

I went through the ldap document at openldap.org and also briefly went
through the LDAP-HOWTO document. Both of these documents talk about
creating index and should be mentioned in ldap.conf. I guess this is
similar to database index. But i didn't understand what present, equality,
etc means

 index default pres,eq
 index objectClass,uid
 index cn,sn eq,sub,appro

can one of u gurus explain what these mean??
