Netscape API for C and openLDAP

Dear Openldap,
I use Netscape API for C to develop client software to operate my openLDAP
server,
I can successfully search and read the entries using the same
inding( Manager), and same
DN,  but I failed in modify the entry, I got an errer code " no such object
" for the ldap_modify_ext_s()
function, is there any compatibility problem between Netscape API for C and
openLDAP server?
or anyone who had come accross this kind of problem?
