no SASL mechanisms?

Hi,

My OpenLDAP installation reports
no supported sasl mechanisms in browser.
I have configured SASL libraries 1.5.24 with 
--disable-krb4 --disable-gssapi --disable-cram --disable-digest
to leave only PLAIN mechanism
because I had no knowledge 
how to maintain Kerberos or shared secret databases.
The Cyrus SASL for System Administrators document
says SASL needs a configuration
file in /usr/lib/sasl for each application 
that uses the library, in this case for slapd, I guess.
Anybody knows how to write and name this file?

Also, is PLAIN mechanism usage 
(by ldap API / command line tools)
secured by any means
to avoid sending clear text passwords?

My platform is Solaris 8.
