Kurt, or anyone, could you expand a little on that statement?

I've been reading up on SSL/TLS, Kerberos, SASL, GSSAPI, NIS, NSS and PAM.
It is not entirely clear to me which of these are alternatives, complements,
or replacements for each other. Can anyone point me to a good web page or
book?
