What I had in mind was:
        LDAP ==> SASL  \
        SMTP ==> SASL   \
        IMAP ==> SASL    >-  common authentication service
        POP3 ==> SASL   /         a) SASLdb
        HTTP ==> SASL  /          b) Kerberos5

In 2.1, we'll work on c) LDAP (note: this work is mostly
within or below the Cyrus SASL libraries, not within slapd).
