userPassword and encryption...

I set up my system to do users' authentification via openLdap on a REdHat6.2
server.
Every time I add a user, I use md5 encryption for his userPassword attribute. 
But if a password his change with the system's passwd program, the new password
is hashed with simple DES. 
Does anybody has a solution to make sure the passwords are crypted with md5??
Is it possible?
