I experienced such stops on FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE (x86) and
openldap-1.2.11. A search like "objectclass=*" would stop and wait
forever.

I did not try this out. I only noticed the stops because I use this
procedure to dump the database nightly into a text file for backup
purposes.
