INSTALL documentation question

The current release (1.2.6) contains the following lines in the INSTALL 
instructions:

If you simply want to build LDAP for a single machine platform, follow
these steps:

 1. untar the distribution and cd to the top:
	...

 2. Type:
	% ./configure --help
	...

 3. edit the file include/ldapconfig.h.edit to configure
    the software for your site (the files are well-commented):

	% vi include/ldapconfig.h.edit

 ... and so on.

I've read (or thought I've read) in several notes to this list that
the ldapconfig.h.edit file should *not* be edited? Is this true? Does
it matter?
