A pointer from me;

I got similar error when I setup my Openldap server recently, and the
solution is as follows:

Look at the format of the LDIF file that you use, whether it is like the one
below (simple entry):

  dn: ou=access,o=company,c=US
  objectclass: top
  objectclass: organizationalUnit
  ou: access

Apparently, some commands that produces LDIF file, i.e. ldbmcat or
ldapsearch -L from some other implementation of U Mich LDAP produces LDIF
entries without the "dn:" operative, thus the first line would read like
this:

  ou=access,o=company,c=US

as was in my case. The entry loaded OK in my case, but search would return
the same error as in yours. Eventually I got a new LDIF with the right
format, loaded it, restarted the daemon, and the thing works. I'm not too
familiar with the techical details as to which version of LDAP server
created or need this other format, maybe someone can help?

But check your LDIF file and see if this is the case.
