Problem accesing custom fields from ActiveDirectory Service within VB

I have created custom fields taht add to inetOrgPerson, and they seem to
work well from Netscape, to GQ to ldapsearch, but whenever someone tries
to access it using MS Active Dir Service, the get a message:
ADSType_Prov_specific instead of the stuff in the field. I have tried
changin the syntax of fields but keep getting same.  Any ideas?  thanks,
