I suggest you look at Netscape's slapi interface
and reuse as much as possible.

I also suggest you start small... like adding an
plugin API to add in syntax/matching rule handlers.

As far as the task you mentioned in your previous
post, I note that this can actually be implemented
without modifying slapd... the external program
can just the replication log (and copy it if needed
to support replication).
