Autoconf help needed (Was: Re: IT-68 ??)

I expect it's waiting for someone who knows autoconf and can rewrite the
configure patch to a configure.in patch.  Can somebody help?  (Kurt can,
and I'm sure it is _somewhere_ on his ever-increasing todo list, but...)
