This problem is causing significant headaches. I am considering
adding a Make-common.gmake that would use gmake style ifdefs
to support conditional assignments. A test could be then
added to select it instead of Make-common.dist if gmake was
being used.
Do folks think this is a workable short term solution to the
FOO?=BAR problem?
