I think this is related to ITS#6327.  It appears to be a bug specifically 
with Linux & SASL, as best I can tell.  So far, I've eliminated OpenLDAP, 
Cyrus-SASL, and Heimdal vs MIT as the culprit.  The only OS I've been able 
to run on where this failure does not occur is Solaris.  I'm working on 
building a 2.4.19 set of libraries on Solaris to confirm that.
