Per Ando's comment above, this should be taken into account with 
SO_KEEPALIVE, but SO_KEEPALIVE didn't come into play with syncrepl until 
ITS#4708 (2.3.28). The submitter notes

"Version: openldap2-2.3.27-25"

and I'd recommend an update before this goes too far out...
