In any case, 2.3.14 will be out soon (matter of days).  It's going to be
mostly a bugfix release, but it will contain the ITS#4115 enhancement
about proxy-side idle-timeout.  You may try it right now by accessing
the OPENLDAP_REL_ENG_2_3 branch of the CVS, or wait when it's out.  It
should provide a last resort solution to your problem, since it allows
you to drop long lasting connections on a scheduled basis.
