I'm not seeing the garbage, I get the right error message, so I guess it 
depends on your setup - some other call is playing with the error 
message field in between, or back-meta is not NULL-ing it when the error 
comes in.  Many occurrences of this have been fixed when moving from 2.2 
to 2.3, so I wouldn't bother too much about it.  In any case, since the 
fix is quite fresh, I can NULL it for this specific case.
