The issue can be considered as resolved.
The problem has been resolved compiling and re-installing perl on the
system. The perl backend embeds the perl interpreter in C. As the
"perlembed" man page states, C programs using Perl should be compiled
exactly as the perl interpreter has been compiled. The most easy way to
achieve this is to compile/install the perl interpreter first and compile
then on the same machine OpenLDAP + Perl backend
