I'm keeping this patch up to date every now and then; it's working fine 
right now
(passes all tests and allows to use a number of overlays in the frontend).
I'm about to submit an up-to-date version of the patch.
I'd like to hear comments about it so that we may decide whether to follow
this development line or drop it.
