How?  Directly or indirectly (e.g., through some non-OpenLDAP library)?

If indirectly, then it simply that 2.2 cannot fulfill dependencies
upon 2.1.  Software built for 2.1 has to be recompiled to create
new dependencies on 2.2.

If directly, you should dig into this further.
