That was a pretty poor decision.  It wouldn't be clean but changing the
code to be more intelligent when reading from stdin would be possible
and unlikely to break older things since reading from stdin wasn't an
option previously.  A better solution would be to fix the existing
broken implementation but that would need to be at a major-release point
due to the interface change.
