When do you modify attributes, using an OpenLdap proxy with back-ldap, the
attributes are modified in the data repository (e.g. and OpenLDAP with ldbm).

But when you search that modified attributes you see strange values for
instance:

uid:: BA==   
sn:: CQ==

The modify operation works fine if you attack directly the data directory (e.g.
OpenLdap with LDBM)
