client can't bind to FQDN, only hostname (ITS#1257)

I have built and installed 2.0.11 on a 1.5 GHz P4 with 256 MB RAM running RedHat
7.1.

Everything starts fine and I have ldapadded about 50,000 entries in it. When I
run
ldapsearch with my hostname (my_hostname), it connects and retrieves info
properly.

When I try to use ldapsearch with my full name (my_hostname.cs.utk.edu), it
gives me 
this error "ldap_bind: Can't contact ldap server". Why?

I start slapd with the -f flag and no others.
