ldap (ITS#1080)

I have Potatoe Debian with 1.2.11 Ldap. I'm trying SO hard to get the
roaming prfiles to work. I've tried two exples so far and in both
instances it _appears_ to authenticate ok, and then says sychronising item
1/1 but then pops up a window telling me there is an authentication error.
I have Netscape 4.76.

When I run slapd in the max debugging I get htis...
   filter: (objectclass=*)
    attrs:
conn=1 op=1 SRCH base="NSLIPROFILENAME=HUGO VAN DER
KOOIJ,OU=ROAMING,DC=VANDERKOOIJ,DC=ORG " scope=0 filter="(objectclass=*)"
send_ldap_result 9::Referral:
ldap://root.openldap.org
ber_flush: 48 bytes to sd 7
         0  . 02 01 02  e  ) 0a 01 09 04 00 04  "  R  e
         f  e  r  r  a  l  : 0a  l  d  a  p  :  /  /  r
         o  o  t  .  o  p  e  n  l  d  a  p  .  o  r  g
        (end)

So it appears to be unable tofind that entry even though it
exists! (please exuse me for using all your details, Just getting a bit
desperate)

nsLIProfileName=Hugo van der Kooij,ou=Roaming,dc=vanderkooij,dc=org
objectclass=top
objectclass=nsLIProfile
nsliprofilename=Hugo van der Kooij
owner=cn=Hugo van der Kooij,ou=hugo,dc=vanderkooij,dc=org
creatorsname=cn=admin,dc=vanderkooij,dc=org
modifiersname=cn=admin,dc=vanderkooij,dc=org
createtimestamp=20010318100135Z
modifytimestamp=20010318100135Z

So it DOES exist.

Ideas?
I have netscape.coinf included and slapd.at.conmf and slapd.oc.conf.
netsacpe.conf comes from
http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld/lw-1999-09/lw-09-ldap-netscape.html2

BTW. looked focore.schema (which other slapd.conf ) configs use but
couldn't find it in the debian distro...not a popular file anymore?

Sorry for putting it all in front of you.
Any reply will bvery much appreciated.
