openldap lib with netscape directory

I am writing a simple ldap client using the openldap libraries to search
for a user and return his/her email. However, there seems to be a bug with
ldap_simple_bind_s() function. I get back
ldap_simple_bind_s: Can't contact LDAP server

If I compiled the same code using netscape ldap libaries, it works as
expected.
